After scouring around this year’s summaries of Golden Globes Beauty Bests and Worsts, seeing what everyone’s been talking about, I have my own two-cents of taste to contribute. Here is it. Bad news first?? That’s my favourite way to go.. So keep reading to see my 2014 BEAUTY WINNER at the bottom ;)
—-FIRST THINGS FIRST: HAIR THAT MADE ME SAY “WTF?!”—-
LIZZY & LENA: MISSED THEIR MARK
Alright, I love Lena Dunham and she is adorable on all accounts… but that hair! I get what she and her stylist were going for but… They diiiiidn’t quite get there.. It’s just a bit of a mess with no direction and too much purposeless volume. A few more defined and controlled waves, and this could have been pretty pretty.
Lizzy Caplan seemed like she was pretty much on the same page as Lena in her quest for carelessly tousled vintage hair, and she did achieve a slightly more successful version… EXCEPT FOR THAT FRINGE FRILL!! Just don’t corkscrew your bangs please. I could have really liked this one if it weren’t for that curiously contrived curly-cue.
PAULA & AUBREY: GALS GONE GREASY
I think Paula Patton was going for classically flat and tamed but got a little grimy instead… Whoops! Also she could have done without the ear tucking, and gotten a little more stylish with a more open, back-swept ‘do that would have flattered her face and features a little more. I do however like her rosy flushing blushing. Very pretty.
I have to say, Aubrey Plaza was the source of my first WTF hair moment this year… I really don’t mind what’s going on below the forehead - classic and classy. But on the top - it’s all kinds of wrong. Like I said - greasy is the first issue, what with that separated string of fringe sticking to her face… But it’s not hard to see there was an excess of product smeared and sprayed all OVER her crown. On top of that, this style is begging for more volume to her left of the part. With her face shape and what’s she’s got going she’s left looking pointy! Ohhh no…
HAYDEN & MILA: INSPIRATION ANYONE?
Please… Just put the slicked pomp-hawk away… It’s soooo over. I feel like this is Hayden Panettiere’s most favourite go-to hairstyle. I mean we’ve seen it over and over! But it’s got to get shelved so that she can get with the times. Sorry sunshine.
Mila Kunis’ style fell flat for me too. It’s not that I disagree with the choice to go with something simple and let the gown do the wowing! But we’ve seen Mila in some version of a slick-backed bun time and time again. It’s not quite a signature look for her and I’d be disappointed if it’s trying to get to that point. Where’s your sense of adventure, Mila?
AMY: EHHHHHHHH……… MEH.
Everybody has been seriously falling all over themselves over Amy Adams’ braided updo!! WHY?!?!?! The style of the braids themselves are neither on-trend, nor interesting, nor original. The work within the volume of the style is nothing impressive. And the whole thing just screams prom to me. To be frank, I’m pretty sure a girl I know did a really similar updo on her mannequin for practice in hair school. I do like the symmetry and the split down the middle, but in my opinion the style could have been much more sophisticated if it was just a little looser, had a touch more direction, and had some purposeful volume incorporated.
These ladies almost did it for me with their makeup choices! Here’s where they went wrong…
KALEY CUOCO: ALMOST the right eyeshadow…
Kaley has some really pretty green peepers, that’s for sure!! Her artist went against complementary color enhancement and instead chose a tricky, unexpected technique of using the same hue to enhance! This works well, and her pretty forest-green shadow on her lid COULD have done a fantastic job of achieving a stunning, cat-like gleam… IF it was paired with a lighter, golden-green or olive color on the lower lash line! Instead, the more grey teal/emerald that was applied on the bottom is too strong, too dark and too blue, which overpowers the lighter, warmer tone of her irises, leaving them looking grey and flat. Good effort though.
CATE BLANCHETT: Cake… Mmm…
I just love the color scheme and less-is-more style here! Unfortunately, the foundation didn’t follow suit. Her perfect pink-stained lips, freshly flushed cheeks, and beautifully bold top-lashes really do it, making Cate look young lively! Unfortunately her foundation is a dead giveaway for her age… Too heavy, and too much powder! I’d be super surprised if her beautiful “expression lines” weren’t ten times more noticeable from all that makeup nuzzling right up into them by the end of the night. I would have loved to see some lighter texture to enhance rather than smother Cate’s gorgeous, timeless complexion.
SARAH HYLAND: Baby baby baby…
What a beautiful young woman Sarah is! Too bad she looks like a very little lady instead. Very pretty and very polished, her casual and classy hair style is right on-point, as is her creamy, barely-there makeup look! Both extremely stunning works from beauty team. Sarah has a beautiful face: heart-shaped, soft, with almost no angles - over time, she will no doubt prove to be ageless. Separately, each element of her Golden-Globes look would perfectly complement! Together though, I’m definitely not a fan. I would have liked to see a more sophisticated makeup look with such a sweet braided crown. I just feel like this look left Sarah sitting at the kiddie table.
JENNIFER LAWRENCE: Close, but no cigar.
Oh I know, everyone LOOOOOOVED Jennifer’s makeup!! I honestly cannot say I agree, and though I find her absolutely stunning, a couple of little details brought this look from top contender to a disappointing performance. It’s really just the finishing touches around the eyes that needed some attention. I’m all for a natural brow, but these were left just a little too wayward for me. I don’t even mind the lack of corrective coloring, but a little brushing with some product would have been nice. I do love the eyeliner and the choice of color for her shadow. THIS is a great example of using similar colors to enhance! The smoky grey is just a little lighter than those deep grey-hazel eyes, and really makes them pop. But the lashes… DISLIKE! They’re sittin’ pretty low and lookin’ pretty spindly… Maybe that’s just my taste but something a little more lifted and a little fuller on her eye shape would have really opened them up. What I do absolutely adore, and believe is the reason behind all the fuss, is that GORGEOUS LIP COLOR!! 10/10!! That there, is this makeup’s saviour.
—-MY TOTAL BEAUTY FAVES—-
Hair AND makeup on these gals got me giddy!
REESE WITHERSPOON: Polished and perfect
Oooo I love her hair!! A side (but not side-SWEPT) fringe, long blunt bob, and one-sided ear tuck are just the types of twists on a classic style I swoon over! Huge props to her makeup artist for that perfect, warm smoky look I’m addicted to, and for achieving just the right amount of drama for her complexion! FRIGGIN BRAVO!!!
CAITLIN FITZGERALD: Easy, breezy, beautiful!
Oh my word. These peachy neutrals left nothing more to desire, and popped just perfectly against this STUNNING powder-blue Emilia Wickstead gown! Staying consistent with the modern take on vintage style, the soft, brushed out waves are an excellent choice for Caitlin’s sharp bone structure. SIMPLE. SOFT. ELEGANT. EFFORTLESS. AH-MAY-ZING. Ugh!
EMMA WATSON: Subtle fashionista
This girl just keeps getting better and better!! What struck me first was the styling of those brows! If you’ve been keeping up on makeup trends on the runway for this coming spring/summer season, these up-brushed babies should look familiar! On top of that, I’m loving the balance of everyday beauty eye makeup, a fresh face and those pink lips against the coral of her open-back frock, which I also am a big fan of! Way to play, Emma. I like your little risk-taking tactics!
ZOOEY DESCHANEL: She’s owning some good sh*t
I’ve been falling more and more in love with absolutely everything about Miss Deschanel. I envy her singing voice and adore her acting, and here she goes again making herself an image of classic style and taste. The low, relaxed chic chignon sets a perfect backdrop for her well-chosen danglers and is just enough to compliment the collective look. BUT THOSE LIPS!! The only pop of color to her creamy complexion and even creamier wardrobe and accessories! Not to mention opposing those baby-blues peeking out from under her signature fringe! Not everyone can pull of a poppy orange, but this lovely lady has proven she sure can.
—-FINALLY! MY 2014 GOLDEN GLOBES BEAUTY WINNER!!—-
AMBER! HEARD! HOLY! CROW!
I would almost say I’m speechless… BUT I’M SO NOT!! Here is why Amber won my little beauty heart this Golden Globe season.
Let’s first talk about Amber Heard’s look at the actual Globes.. Makeup - AMAZING! Hair - AMAZINGER!! I’m left LOVING this soft, glowing smoky eye!! Like I’ve mentioned, eye makeups like these are my favorites. Add those beautiful, full lashes and pair it together with an ideally balancing neutral lip and you’ve got me! This is both classic AND on-trend! Also, the complexion is perfect in color and texture. Extremely believable, 100% matching, and radiant! WE CAN’T FORGET THE HAIR! Ohhhhhhhhhh the hair! This is messy to the magical max. It is still refined but is anything but contrived! And from EVERY SINGLE ANGLE the proportions, shape and direction are overwhelmingly pleasing to the eye. Let’s also offer a small and deserved applause for leaving not a single hair pin in sight. Well-pinned, stylist!!
Now let’s talk about this beauty queen’s pre-Globes appearance at the Art of Elysium’s annual Heaven Gala. What I love so much about Amber’s hair and makeup here is that her beauty team showed the absolute opposite from what we saw at the Golden Globes! The hair is much more definite, complimenting a makeup look that is much more fun and trendy, playing with glowing skin and boldly bright lips.
Together these looks have landed Amber at the top of my list not only for her admirable appearance at both appearances, but also for the strategy involved in combining every aspect of each. This is how events should be done.
There are many admirable qualities I’ll gladly admit to always having possessed. I’ve always been kind, that’s for sure. I’ve always been smart, or at least used my brain. I’ve always had a creative eye and produced pretty things. And, I’ve always shown excellent work ethic, at least when I’ve cared about my work.
Humility, though, does not belong on the “always” list.
Shy – yes. I’ve spent long, flushed periods of my life stuck in the realm of shyness, particularly throughout my childhood. Never the less, I naturally thrived on praise (what can I say - year of the dragon), gleaming through those braces every time I did better on a project or test than the other kids in my class, shooting my hand in the air just to be the first to know the answer. (I’ve even been deemed a brown-noser by some, thanks to the keener’s combo of this need for praise and that work ethic I mentioned.) This pride, though, was appropriately merited because I did, in fact, have something to be proud of.
Pride in my schoolwork aside, I still flushed a brilliant fuchsia whenever my eagerly volunteered hand was asked for the answer. To my pre-teen relief, puberty was (pretty much) the end of my time as a blushing baby. Shyness was magically chased away and all I was left with was an incredible feeling of self-confidence. Suddenly I felt powerful, in control, and unstoppable. I did everything. And yes, I was damn proud of myself.
Since then, I’ve flip flopped myself between such deep-rooted shyness, and the sense of control and confidence I prefer. I’ve fought to keep hold of my sense of power and pride (however valid) whenever I’ve started to feel the slip in to introversion.
Ponder: confidence vs. cockiness.
Upon the crumble of my own confidence (keep reading), I really had to take a close look at what I had previously thought of myself. I literally asked Google this exact question. Confidence, it answered, is to truly know you’re great because you are and it’s actual. Cockiness is to think and act as though you’re great without really having anything to back it up.
For the majority of my career as a makeup artist, one could say I’ve been a big fish in a small pond. I’ve stood out and been noticed. I’ve expected respect and received it. And I’ve felt that in comparison there was no comparison.
Eventually, either my ego or I felt too big and my pond was just too small. I needed to keep swimming. I was ready to move. OH, WAS I READY! I was ready to come onto a new scene and conquer it like I had the one before. I was ready, and I just knew everybody was ready for me. Everybody would want to know me. How could they not? Couldn’t they already know, or wouldn’t they be eager to find out all that I was and all that I had done? I was proud, and I had this by the balls.
Oh. My. God. I look back on this and can’t help but laugh, roll my eyes, and shake my head at the same time. I ran away from that tiny pond and ran straight into my own disaster. Everything I had felt I had such a strong grasp on slipped right through my fingers. I made stupid, ignorant choices, most likely burnt some very helpful bridges (hey Mike), overstepped unknown boundaries (what’s up Sai), and just generally exposed my previously undiscovered lack of experience. Experience of which I had boasted so much. To say the least, I had embarrassed myself.
And so I fell, to the lowest of my lows. I was crushed. Flooded with self-doubt, shame and uncertainty. I found myself asking some of my toughest questions, which ran deeper than my work (the beauty of this career being that it is so deeply personal.) What did I really know? What didn’t I know at all? Confidence? How could I have ever felt it, when it was the last thing I could imagine feeling at that moment? I didn’t deserve to. (With all of this gone, WHO WAS I?!?) I was not great at all. Suddenly the picture grew to a different scale. All ponds considered, what I had possessed in the past could only be defined as cockiness. I thought I was great, but now could see that there was nothing to prove it. And my pride must admit that to be the great only matters when weighed against greatness.
Lost in this uncharted territory, I was paralyzed. I wouldn’t do anything. I couldn’t do anything. So, I stopped. For the first time in years, I sat back and I observed. That in itself was terrifying. But what else could I do?
I’ve been looking long and hard around this new, bigger pond. Perspective, I tell you, is everything. It’s been a process, this struggle of pride, and confidence, or should I say the lack thereof. I’m just making my way out of what is truly one of the most challenging, character-testing, personally defining times of my adult life (so far.) Yes, I’m still a big fish and yes, I still do have so much to be proud of. I’m proud of my talent and the skills I’ve developed. I’m proud of the loyalty and support I’ve earned through my still-budding career. I’m proud of the passion, knowledge and integrity I’ve been able to spread. I’m proud of each and every one of my many accomplishments and successes. But there are other big fish all over the place… And bigger ones… And GIANT ones! And little baby ones, and medium sized ones… All carrying with them their own successes and senses of pride. Now, see, the playing field has been leveled, and these fish know the rules.
So here I’ve arrived, with a renewed, more grounded sense of pride sans superiority. With space within me that is free of egotism and free to harbor respect. Respect to fuel my drive to learn and grow and absorb. Drive that I haven’t felt so strongly in a long time. Drive to learn these rules and to swim with these fish. I’ve found my humility, beautifully complimented by what I know will grow be a truer, more sustainable confidence. This time, I have something stronger to hold onto. This time, it’s more real.
